HURRICANE IAN, SEPTEMBER 28, 2022

The photo below shows the powerful blow that Kelly's FishHouse Dining Room endured in the wake of Hurricane IAN.

Unfortunately, during Hurricane IAN, the historic waterfront restaurant was inundated with water from the storm surge. Kelly's is situated with a great view right on the Gordon River, which connects to Naples Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. “We got about 40 inches, inside the dining room” said Keith Ellis, son of owner Kelly Ellis said. “Surprisingly, it wasn’t as bad as expected, especially being so close to the water.

The devastation is even worse, since it interrupts Stone Crab season, which runs from October 15 thru May 1. This is important to the bottom line for Combs (our fishing operation) and Kelly’s Dining Room, said Keith. "Fresh Stone Crabs are one of our major offerings because we are the only restaurant with our own fleet, and the only fish house still operating in Naples.”

When the storm hit, we had 40,000 pounds of pig’s feet in our freezer (for stone crab bait). As soon as I saw the water coming up, I’m thinking, "oh, my God, what do you do with 40,000 pounds of rotten bait?" Luckily, the water level stopped right below that freezer which is elevated, and so our bait was saved. We are super-fortunate for that.”

NOVEMBER WILL BE OUR 70th ANNIVERSARY!

While the Kelly's crew is working around the clock to reopen the restaurant by early November, Stone Crabs are available now, both wholesale and retail from the dock of their adjacent seafood company, Combs Fish Co.  "Combs catches the Stone Crabs and then sells them to Kelly’s Fish House and other resellers” Ellis said. “It’s all the same owner but Combs is the actual fish house.”

We definitely expect to be back serving Stone Crabs in our restaurant again, while the season is still in full swing! Please check back with us to see how we are progressing with our cleanup.

Meanwhile, Kelly's Shell Shack is open for business, but has intermittent  phone service. C'mon in!
